Google free listings and paid Shopping ads both help retailers surface products across Google, but they serve different purposes.
- Free listings provide product visibility without media cost and can appear across Search, Shopping, Images, YouTube, Maps, Lens, Gemini, and Google Business Profile product modules.
- Paid Shopping ads give retailers more control over which products they promote, how much they spend, and where they focus that spend.
Advantages of Free Listings
The primary benefit of free listings is additional product visibility without paying for impressions or clicks. These can be great options for:
- Large catalogs where advertising every product does not make sense
- Retailers with limited advertising budgets
- Products that are not a priority for paid campaigns
Free listings also have reach beyond the traditional Shopping tab. Products may surface through experiences such as Lens, Gemini, Maps, and Business Profiles. The limitation is that retailers have less influence over how much visibility an individual product receives. Product data can be improved to help Google understand and match an item, but there is no bid or budget that can be used to increase exposure.
Advantages of Paid Shopping Ads
Paid Shopping ads allow retailers to put additional budget behind specific products and business priorities. These can be great options for:
- New product or category launches
- Seasonal promotions
- Best sellers & High-margin products
- Categories where additional visibility is important
Paid campaigns also provide additional controls around budgets, bidding, geographic targeting, product participation, and performance goals. Depending on the campaign type, paid ads can also extend into Google inventory that free listings do not, including Discover, Gmail, Display, and search partner sites.
When Should Retailers Use Both?
Free and paid listings do not need to be an either/or decision. A retailer can make a broad portion of its catalog eligible for free listings while using paid campaigns for products where additional exposure is worth the investment.
If Paid Advertising is not an Option
Free listings still provide meaningful product exposure across Google. For retailers without a paid Shopping budget, the focus should be on making as much eligible inventory available as possible and providing Google with accurate, complete product information.
